This is hard to understand if you are not a native speaker.

This is for the first time to hear it in my daily lesson.

For the first time, it means something sweet story or not. but it mentions about quite different meaning.

But you know, Japanese are known as polite people. I wonder this is true or not.

I guess most Japanese hate to say directly what they feel. We hate having an argument in spite of tiny things. This is a reason that foreigners say understanding the Japanese mind is very difficult.
